Over my head (Cable Car) - The Fray song meaning

From the 2005 album, How to save a life

This song is titled after Isaac Slade’s brother, Cable Car (real name Caleb) that depicts the time they’ve been during the tough times of their relationship.  The “Over my head” saying is when you’ve done something and completely lose yourself cause it’s simply too much of what you can handle.

Though it may seem like what every normal sibling we’re going through - Individual differences could drift you apart no matter how it seems like you we’re inseparable in your early childhood age.

There’s a picturesque of a bickering in the cable car hanging above in the air with what’s beneath is a deep danger. Indeed, every quarrel is a double bladed sword. Using “a girl” (she’s on your mind..)  embodied different matters that could possibly cause an argument. Yet another step backward before totally losing each other’s end.

But no matter what, you’re still bonded by a thread that yeah, may or will worn out but is definitely strong enough to hold each other from end to end.  Cause yeah, you’re not just a stranger I could disengage.

About the band

The Fray, an American rock band from Colorado formed in 2002. Lead singer, Isaac Slade experienced losing his voice during his childhood which led him to focus in playing piano in his childhood years.
The band hit the spotlight shortly after the release of their album How to save which the song itself became the debut of their success. And just a little trivia, the song is written for the kid in a youth camp that came to him for an advise but unfortunately commit a suicide few days after. The song produced different versions.

About the music

It does sound like an alternative rock but the dominance of the keys in piano made it pop. Pop rock and power ballad would exactly describe the style of their music. The rise and fall in the tone is really charismatic that could definitely capture even the none-listeners of rock genre. And there’s the meaning of the lyrics of course.

Here's the lyrics and the music video. Enjoy!

Over my head (Cable Car)

I never knew
I never knew
that everything was falling through
That everyone I knew was waiting on a queue
To turn and run
when all I needed was the truth
But that's how it's got to be
It's coming down to nothing more than apathy
I'd rather run the other way than stay and see
The smoke and who's still standing when it clears

When everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Let's rearrange
I wish you were a stranger I could disengage
Just say that we agree and then never change
Soften a bit until we all just get along
But that's disregard
Find another friend and you discard
As you lose the argument in a cable car
Hanging above as the canyon comes between

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on, oh...

And suddenly I become a part of your past
I'm becoming the part that don't last
I'm losing you and it's effortless
Without a sound we lose sight of the ground
In the throw around
Never thought that you wanted to bring it down
I won't let it go down till we torch it ourselves

And everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Everyone knows
She's on your mind
Everyone knows I'm in over my head
I'm in over my head
I'm in over...

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Gotye - Somebody that I used to know feat Kimbra song review

From the album, Making Mirrors.

A former love that wishes nothing more than catching up and building a connection without asking for another love affair again came across a cold and unfamiliar person instead.

Jealousy, infidelity and discontentment indeed equate a bitter break up. And what is there left to a love without trust? Better stop than ending yourself to a total suicide martyrdom drama.

Yet just another stranger who passed by.

About Gotye,
Wouter "Wally" De Backer an Aussie singer which deliver this song to the number 1 spot for eight weeks making a huge success on some European countries as well.
The featured artist, Kimbra is a New Zealand singer.

About the music,
Xylophone, bass, polyphonic sounds – the good ol’ times. What really amazed me is how he spills the lyrics in a very calm manner and hitting a completely different note on the chorus does intensify the sentiment of his emotion.

There you go. Lyrics and official video below. Enjoy!

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end
Always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
And you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
And I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know...

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
And you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

I used to know
That I used to know

Somebody...

Gavin DeGraw - Not Over You music review

From the album Sweeter, 2011.

The title has said too much about the song. It’s about holding on to the courage of moving on. Though there are still times that you’re past memories are still haunting you. Suddenly the truth hits you, you’re not completely over it.

Putting up an upfront face that you’re strong enough to get through this height although deep down you know it’s killing you. Even though you know how badly this person have hurt you and treated you like a shit, the fond memory washes away the anger and the thought of your sweet romance subside and just like that, you’re missing that person again. But in the end, it’s all about putting an end to what used to be good. Having enough of enough.

Moving on might seems like an eternity but it is a step towards self improvement and acknowledging windows of opportunities that you’ve been missing because you’re way too busy heading steadfast towards nowhere.

Now is the guy singing want the girl back? I don’t think so. Do you?

About Gavin
He’s song “I don’t want to be” have became his first step to spotlight. This has been the theme song of One tree hill in 2003. After this, few of his song became a theme song in few TV series.
It is said that he’s been living his second life after the incident in August of 2011.

DeGraw has said that his ultimate goal is "to leave this world a better person, and for me to not be the only one who knows it."

About the music
For a second it made me guess that he’s a British. The music style, arrangement and all that. But then he’s a New Yorker.

It is actually revolting how a musician could make use of a different style whilst making his signature stay on his music. Now that’s what we call versatility.

Not much elements in the music but it’s amazing how they make the most out of keyboard, snare, drum and play with this pieces to complete the whole arrangement of the song. Props for the back up vocals too.

Below are the lyrics of the song and the official music video.
Hope you enjoy my review. Spill your thoughts on the comment box!

Not Over You

Dreams, That's Where I Have To Go
To See Your Beautiful Face Anymore
I Stare At A Picture Of You And Listen To The Radio
Hope, Hope There's A Conversation
We Both Admit We Had It Good But
Until Then It's Alienation, I Know, That Much Is Understood
And I Realize

CHORUS:
If You Ask Me How I'm Doin I Would Say I'm Doin Just Fine
I Would Lie And Say That You're Not On My Mind
But I Go Out And I Sit Down At A Table Set For Two
And Finally I'm Forced To Face The Truth
No Matter What They Say, I'm Not Over You
Not Over You

Damn, Damn Girl You Do It Well
And I Thought You Were Innocent
You Took This Heart And Put It Through Hell
But Still You're Magnificent
I I'm A Boomerang Doesn't Matter How You Throw Me
Turn Around And I'm Back In The Game
Even Better Than The Old Me
But I'm Not Even Close Without You

CHORUS:
If You Ask Me How I'm Doin I Would Say I'm Doin Just Fine
I Would Lie And Say That You're Not On My Mind
But I Go Out And I Sit Down At A Table Set For Two
And Finally I'm Forced To Face The Truth.
No Matter What I Say, I'm Not Over You

BRIDGE:
And If I Had The Chance To Renew
You Know There Isn't A Thing I Wouldn't Do
I Could Get Back On The Right Track
But Only If You'd Be Convinced
So Until Then

CHORUS:
If You Ask Me How I'm Doin I Would Say I'm Doin Just Fine
I Would Lie And Say That You're Not On My Mind
But I Go Out And I Sit Down At A Table Set For Two
And Finally I'm Forced To Face The Truth
No Matter What I Say, I'm Not Over You
Not Over You
Not Over You
Not Over You
