Over my head (Cable Car) - The Fray song meaning

From the 2005 album, How to save a life

This song is titled after Isaac Slade’s brother, Cable Car (real name Caleb) that depicts the time they’ve been during the tough times of their relationship.  The “Over my head” saying is when you’ve done something and completely lose yourself cause it’s simply too much of what you can handle.

Though it may seem like what every normal sibling we’re going through - Individual differences could drift you apart no matter how it seems like you we’re inseparable in your early childhood age.

There’s a picturesque of a bickering in the cable car hanging above in the air with what’s beneath is a deep danger. Indeed, every quarrel is a double bladed sword. Using “a girl” (she’s on your mind..)  embodied different matters that could possibly cause an argument. Yet another step backward before totally losing each other’s end.

But no matter what, you’re still bonded by a thread that yeah, may or will worn out but is definitely strong enough to hold each other from end to end.  Cause yeah, you’re not just a stranger I could disengage.

About the band

The Fray, an American rock band from Colorado formed in 2002. Lead singer, Isaac Slade experienced losing his voice during his childhood which led him to focus in playing piano in his childhood years.
The band hit the spotlight shortly after the release of their album How to save which the song itself became the debut of their success. And just a little trivia, the song is written for the kid in a youth camp that came to him for an advise but unfortunately commit a suicide few days after. The song produced different versions.

About the music

It does sound like an alternative rock but the dominance of the keys in piano made it pop. Pop rock and power ballad would exactly describe the style of their music. The rise and fall in the tone is really charismatic that could definitely capture even the none-listeners of rock genre. And there’s the meaning of the lyrics of course.

Here's the lyrics and the music video. Enjoy!

Over my head (Cable Car)

I never knew
I never knew
that everything was falling through
That everyone I knew was waiting on a queue
To turn and run
when all I needed was the truth
But that's how it's got to be
It's coming down to nothing more than apathy
I'd rather run the other way than stay and see
The smoke and who's still standing when it clears

When everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Let's rearrange
I wish you were a stranger I could disengage
Just say that we agree and then never change
Soften a bit until we all just get along
But that's disregard
Find another friend and you discard
As you lose the argument in a cable car
Hanging above as the canyon comes between

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on, oh...

And suddenly I become a part of your past
I'm becoming the part that don't last
I'm losing you and it's effortless
Without a sound we lose sight of the ground
In the throw around
Never thought that you wanted to bring it down
I won't let it go down till we torch it ourselves

And everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Everyone knows
She's on your mind
Everyone knows I'm in over my head
I'm in over my head
I'm in over...

Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head
Over my head
With eight seconds left in overtime
She's on your mind
She's on your mind

Gavin DeGraw - Not Over You music review

From the album Sweeter, 2011.

The title has said too much about the song. It’s about holding on to the courage of moving on. Though there are still times that you’re past memories are still haunting you. Suddenly the truth hits you, you’re not completely over it.

Putting up an upfront face that you’re strong enough to get through this height although deep down you know it’s killing you. Even though you know how badly this person have hurt you and treated you like a shit, the fond memory washes away the anger and the thought of your sweet romance subside and just like that, you’re missing that person again. But in the end, it’s all about putting an end to what used to be good. Having enough of enough.

Moving on might seems like an eternity but it is a step towards self improvement and acknowledging windows of opportunities that you’ve been missing because you’re way too busy heading steadfast towards nowhere.

Now is the guy singing want the girl back? I don’t think so. Do you?

About Gavin
He’s song “I don’t want to be” have became his first step to spotlight. This has been the theme song of One tree hill in 2003. After this, few of his song became a theme song in few TV series.
It is said that he’s been living his second life after the incident in August of 2011.

DeGraw has said that his ultimate goal is "to leave this world a better person, and for me to not be the only one who knows it."

About the music
For a second it made me guess that he’s a British. The music style, arrangement and all that. But then he’s a New Yorker.

It is actually revolting how a musician could make use of a different style whilst making his signature stay on his music. Now that’s what we call versatility.

Not much elements in the music but it’s amazing how they make the most out of keyboard, snare, drum and play with this pieces to complete the whole arrangement of the song. Props for the back up vocals too.

Below are the lyrics of the song and the official music video.
Hope you enjoy my review. Spill your thoughts on the comment box!

Not Over You

Dreams, That's Where I Have To Go
To See Your Beautiful Face Anymore
I Stare At A Picture Of You And Listen To The Radio
Hope, Hope There's A Conversation
We Both Admit We Had It Good But
Until Then It's Alienation, I Know, That Much Is Understood
And I Realize

CHORUS:
If You Ask Me How I'm Doin I Would Say I'm Doin Just Fine
I Would Lie And Say That You're Not On My Mind
But I Go Out And I Sit Down At A Table Set For Two
And Finally I'm Forced To Face The Truth
No Matter What They Say, I'm Not Over You
Not Over You

Damn, Damn Girl You Do It Well
And I Thought You Were Innocent
You Took This Heart And Put It Through Hell
But Still You're Magnificent
I I'm A Boomerang Doesn't Matter How You Throw Me
Turn Around And I'm Back In The Game
Even Better Than The Old Me
But I'm Not Even Close Without You

CHORUS:
If You Ask Me How I'm Doin I Would Say I'm Doin Just Fine
I Would Lie And Say That You're Not On My Mind
But I Go Out And I Sit Down At A Table Set For Two
And Finally I'm Forced To Face The Truth.
No Matter What I Say, I'm Not Over You

BRIDGE:
And If I Had The Chance To Renew
You Know There Isn't A Thing I Wouldn't Do
I Could Get Back On The Right Track
But Only If You'd Be Convinced
So Until Then

CHORUS:
If You Ask Me How I'm Doin I Would Say I'm Doin Just Fine
I Would Lie And Say That You're Not On My Mind
But I Go Out And I Sit Down At A Table Set For Two
And Finally I'm Forced To Face The Truth
No Matter What I Say, I'm Not Over You
Not Over You
Not Over You
Not Over You

Drops of Jupiter – Train : Song Review

From the 2001 album, Drops of Jupiter

The original meaning of this song by which was written by the Train’s front man is actually meant for the loss of her mother. But if you will dig deeper on the song, you will find that the entire song also fits to the comeback of a one long lost love and the questions that lies upon that. The song title: Drops of Jupiter’s connotation means for me is a fraction death of one self. I derived this from Greek mythological character; Jupiter as the god of death. “And now she’s back in the atmosphere with Drops of Jupiter in her head.”

Honestly, it’s hard to describe it in a “he/she” manner so might as well take the guy’s voice and express it in my own tone.

“Hey, wow you’re back! I actually can’t believe that after the long and painful process of moving on, I’ll see you again - the person that I let go and asked for its freedom in order to find itself. From the way you walk and talk, I can see that A LOT has change since then. But then despite this thick all-new packaging of yours, I know deep down that you’re still the same person that I fell for.

So how’s it?
How was it like out there? Did you find what you’re looking for? Had you make up the most out of life and everything that it has to offer? Did you fell crazily deep in love and fool around over and over? Did life give you the assurance that you always crave for? And isn’t all of these is what you always wanted to have? Or…Don’t tell me you went that far only to figure out that real happiness is often times over rated?

Nope, I did not stay the same. Don’t think that I’m still that plain old jane and here forth silently regrets that, I am too afraid to take on the big step that’s why I remain forever still.

But hey, Can you remember these crazy little things that used to bring up simple but genuine smiles on our face? Ahh, Memories! :’)

Above all of this, Can you tell me if does somewhere along your journey in pursuit of happiness, you wished that I am still beside you along the way?”

About TRAIN
After his former band Led Zeppelin dissolution, Pat Monahan build the new band Train in California. The band got their big break by doing the commercial jingle of Coca ColaSome of their popular songs are Hey, soul sister and Marry Me. I just love how this band can play around their music and sway from genres to another genres. One of those few bands who can really play their music LIVE.

About the music
This song is a rich in every elements; from the lyrics, down to its rhythm that makes up the totality of the music . Every listener would definitely admire its theatricality sound and how every instruments blend in that compliments the deep and emotional lyrics of this song. This song produces a lot of rendition from popular artist like Boyce Avenue.

Who's artist got the best rendition of this song?

Fast Car – Tracy Chapman : Song Review

From her self-titled album : Tracy Chapman.

This is another song about courage and love. The song title: Fast Car for me is taking on life hastily.

Basically, it’s about a girl who met this guy who’s running fast in his life. The guy is ambitious and impulsive. At first, the girl wanted to get drifted along the ride in the guy’s fast car to escape the life that she had and just move along. After all, the girl had nothing to lose. So she took the risk with hopes that he can turn her and their life around.

So they went off, escape and runaway from yesterday and build a life on their own. Bearing the courage that their love can take on Anything. Everything.

But then things don’t come easy; the guy wanted more than what they had. Regrettably, the girl can’t get that far as rooted from her unfortunate past as heard in the second stanza.

See, what the guy makes her feel is the sense of belongingness and security despite the fact that the only thing that they had at the very moment is their selves. But more importantly; the guy taught the girl to Dream and don’t settle for any less leaving him with an option: “leave tonight or live and die this way.”

About Tracy Chapman
She’s an American singer – songwriter who is a politically and socially active musician (as heard on her 88’s song: Talking about revolution). I admire how her voice gets deep and sounds more of like a guy. Another popular song from her is “Baby can I hold you”. On an interview about her, she said that Fast Car is the closest song to her heart and describes about her previous life as she went through the cycle of poverty and chasing empty dreams.

About the Music
An 88’s song that is built in a simple arrangement structure. Acoustic on all stanzas’s followed by a heavy drum and bass beat in the chorus that intensifies the totality of the mood and highlights the scene that would definitely play on every listener’s head. For each of the first time listener, the flow of words on the chorus will surely makes you chase the lyrics and opt to hear it again. Not to mention the LSS-ing factor: ”I…I, got the feeling that I belong and I…I, had the feeling that I could be someone. Be someone.

Watch this live performance that will definitely move you:
